Clinical Trial Pediatric Travel — Commercial Return Replaced by Air Ambulance
A patient’s condition changed after treatment, requiring the return journey to be rebuilt around an air ambulance and specialized ground transportation.
Context
A clinical trial participant traveled to a study site with family members and was medically cleared to fly commercially in both directions.
However, during dosing, the participant’s condition declined to the point where commercial air travel was no longer possible for the return journey.
Challenge
The original return plan was no longer possible.
The participant now required medically appropriate air transportation, specialized ground transfers, and coordination around accompanying family members, while the existing commercial flights and related travel arrangements also had to be changed or canceled.
Solution
Tripsmarter worked alongside the clinical and medical teams to rebuild the return journey around the participant’s changed condition.
We coordinated an air ambulance for the participant’s return home, along with specialized ground transportation to and from the aircraft. We also revised travel arrangements for the accompanying family members.
At the same time, we managed the cancellation and adjustment of the original commercial itinerary and other affected travel components.
Impact
What began as a standard participant and family itinerary became a coordinated medical transportation operation.
The participant was transported home using the appropriate level of care, while the study team and family were supported through a complex, time-sensitive medical escalation.
